Alumnae Quarterly, Fall Issue

Hi all! While I know it's far from the minds of many, your class officers are already in the process of planning for the next Reunion. If any of you would like to volunteer, please contact me. We would appreciate the assistance in making it a most special time for all of us. Well, on the news . . .

Deborah Hardt from Talbot House has been living in Minneapolis/St. Paul for the past nine months, after a stint in Paris.  Deborah is working for PBS on a project about Jane Goodall (airing this fall) and even had the chance to spend a few days in the mountains of Tanzania with some chimpanzees! She does not monkey around! Last summer, as she passed through NY, she saw Paige Robinson '84 and Taya Swenson '91. Deborah sends her best wishes to all of her Chateau Talbot comrades.

Ana Cristina Lopez-Cralk graduated from Georgetown's business school in 1995 and is with Citibank in El Salvador. She also had the following update on fellow Smithies:  Tory Goldin, who graduated from business school at Wharton in 1997, is moving to CA. Lecia Brown is in the U.S. Air Force at McConnell Base in Wichita, KS, and planned to start medical school in the fall.  Tanya Luthra was married in January and moved to London. She works with Monitor Consultants. Amy Rhinelander is the mother of three adorable boys and lives in NJ. Meg Butler works at a research and development firm in NJ.

On a sad note, Joyce Chiang's memorial service was held in April. (Her obituary appears in the fall issue of the Quarterly.) Jeanne Chisamore, assistant director for the classes of 1989 - 1998, sent me Rehana Farrell's description of the service: "yesterday's memorial service for Joyce was beautiful. There was a large photo of her at the front of the cathedral, surrounded by flowers. A full mass was conducted, at which Joyce's mom participated in the communion service. Smith and INS friends assisted in the service and greeted guests at the door." Among those giving testimonials were Congressman Howard Berdman, Sally Szold Boasberg '58, on behalf of Smith College President Ruth Simmons and the Smith College Board of Trustees; Kate Connelly '95 and Amy Call '95 on behalf of Smith friends; classmates from Georgetown Law School; and Joyce's brother, Roger. Rehana also sent a copy of the remarks made by the Smith College Club of Washington, D.C.: "Her beautiful smile, her 'Cookie Monster' voice, her desire to give coupons to strangers in stores, her crazy dancing and her passionate karaoke . . . . Giving was a cornerstone of Joyce's character. Not long after one of our friends told Joyce that she loved airplanes, Joyce started periodically sending her packages of peanuts from her various airplane trips. With gestures such as these, Joyce mad us feel like we were a part of her very small circle of close friends and only recently have we realized just how large that circle truly was . . . Joyce made our lives better, our hearts fuller, our worlds bigger. We are better people for having known her."
